MEDFORD -- Senior tri-captain Adam Choice (Newport, RI) scored
21 of his game-high 25 points in the first half on nine for 10
shooting as the visiting Colby College Mules opened up a 51-27 lead
and went on to an easy 91-68 victory at Tufts University in a
NESCAC men's basketball game on Friday night.
Colby shot 65.5 percent (19/29) in the first half and finished
at 53.3 percent (32/60) overall, including 10 for 17 (58.8 percent)
on threes. The Mules improved to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the
league. Tufts, which was led by 18 points on six for 11 field goals
(four for six on threes) by freshman guard Alex Goldfarb
(New York, NY), lost their fifth straight and fell to 3-12
including 0-3 in NESCAC.
The Jumbos never led in the game, but they were within 20-16
following a lay-up by senior Reed Morgan (Brooklyn,
NY) with 12:12 to go until halftime. However, Colby scored
22 of the next 26 points to blow open a 42-20 lead with 3:39
remaining until intermission. Choice had nine points during the
stretch, including a dunk and a three-pointer.
The Mules led by 24 at halftime. Senior tri-captain Justin
Sherman (Piedmont, CA) had 10 points at the break, while Tufts was
led by six points each by seniors Jon Pierce (Belmont,
MA) and Dave Beyel (Ocean City, NJ).
The Colby lead hit 30 (59-29) early in the second half on a
lay-up by senior Chas Woodward (Vero Beach, FL). The margin got as
high as 35 points, 82-47, following a three-pointer by Mules
freshman Gordan Fischer (Camden, ME).
Thirteen players overall scored points for Colby, with Sherman's
17 joining Choice in double figures. Junior Mike Russell
(Wellesley, MA) finished with a game-high seven rebounds as Colby
won the battle of the boards 40-29. The Mules were a solid 17 of 21
(81 percent) from the line, with 10 different players shooting free
throws.
Goldfarb was a bright spot for Tufts, scoring 15 points in the
second half. Morgan finished with 10 points. Tufts finished at 42.9
percent (24/56).
The Jumbos continue their NESCAC weekend tomorrow afternoon at 4
pm when they host Bowdoin College. Colby travels to in-state rival
Bates for a conference game tomorrow afternoon.
