NORTON -- Freshmen Matt Rand (Cape Elizabeth,
ME) and Kyle Marks (Carmel, IN) went 1-2
in the 5,000 meter run, and classmate Curtis Yancy (St.
Louis, MO) was first in the shot put, highlighting the
Tufts University men's indoor track & field team's performance
at the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Jumbos placed fourth as a team by scoring 68 points.
Williams College won the invitational with 123.5 points, followed
by the host Lyons (112) and Division II Stonehill (98) in a
competitive 10-team field.
Rand won the 5K with a 5:15.31 time, followed by Marks in
15:23.73. Yancy's winning toss in the shot put went 13.88 meters
and he was also third in the weight throw with a distance of 13.7
meters.
Two good early-season times in middle distance events also
sparked the Jumbo effort. Senior quad-captain Billy Hale
(Menlo Park, CA) finished second in the 800 meter run with
a 1:56.33 time, approximately a second and a half off the NCAA
provisional mark. Junior Jeff Ragazzini (Wilton,
CT) was second in the mile run, with his time of 4:20.31
three seconds off the leading pace.
The Tufts 4x400 relay also scored runner-up points with a
3:28.08 time.
Coach Ethan Barron will split the squad between two meets next
Saturday (Jan. 30). Jumbos are in the field at the annual Terrier
Classic hosted by Boston University and also at the Bowdoin
Invitational.
