NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Freshman Rob Harrigan (Milford, CT) netted
a three-pointer as time expired to lift the Connecticut College
men's basketball team (8-12, 1-5 NESCAC) to an 83-81 NESCAC victory
against Tufts University (5-14, 1-5) at Luce Fieldhouse on Saturday
afternoon. Harrigan scored a team-high 24 points for the Camels and
was a perfect six for six from long distance in the win.
Demetrius Porter (Virginia Beach, VA) chipped in with 23 points
and four assists for the Camels. Senior Shavar Bernier (Dover, NH)
netted 20 points and was five for eight from three. Bernier is just
nine triples away from tying the school record for perimeter
prowess established by Dwayne Stallings. He moved into 13th place
on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,116 points.
Tufts University senior Jon Pierce (Belmont,
MA) poured in a game-high 35 points with seven rebounds in
a losing effort for the visitors. Pierce was 12 for 17 from the
field and 10 for 13 at the foul line. The game marked his second
straight contest with better than 30 points after he scored 32 last
night at Wesleyan. Pierce is now just 22 points away from tying the
Tufts all-time scoring record of 1,785 points set by Greg Davis
from 1982-86.
Senior Dave Beyel (Ocean City, NJ) chipped in
with 15 points and five boards for the Jumbos at Conn.
Tufts carried a 40-28 advantage into the break and led 63-52 after
junior Sam Mason (York, ME) converted a bucket on
an offensive rebound with 10:07 remaining in regulation. But the
Camels would not go away in this one and used a 12-2 run to trim
the deficit to a single point. Dean Lampe (Hamilton, MA) capped the
rally, taking a one-handed bounce bass from Porter and kissing it
off the glass for a deuce to make it a 65-64 game with 6:54
remaining.
With 27 seconds left, Porter put the Camels on top 80-79 with a
basket in the low post. But Tufts regained a one-point edge when
Pierce converted a field goal on a pass from Mason with 13 seconds
left.
Harrigan rimmed out a two-point attempt with four seconds left
but, the Camels maintained their possession with 1.3 seconds
remaining. On the ensuing inbounds play, Harrigan took an outlet
pass from Brian Mahoney (Quincy, MA). He had just enough time to
step around his defender and release a high arching shot for the
game-winner.
