MALDEN -- With Tufts serving a five-minute major penalty,
Skidmore freshman Zach Menard (Burlington, MA) scored with 1:54
remaining in the third period to give the visiting Thoroughbreds a
3-3 tie against the Jumbos in a NESCAC/ECAC East men's hockey game
on Saturday afternoon at Valley Forum II.
Tufts had scored twice in the third period to take a 3-2 lead.
The Jumbos finished with their second tie in as many days,
including a 2-2 final against Castleton on Friday night. They are
now 8-7-3 overall and 4-6-3 in league play. Skidmore (7-11-1,
6-6-1) stopped a three-game losing streak.
The Thoroughbreds got on the scoreboard first when sophomore
Tyler Doremus (Aspen, CO) potted a rebound with 5:29 remaining in
the first period for his seventh goal. The Jumbos, out-shot 17-10
in the period, evened the score with 2:02 on the clock when junior
Zach Diaco (Rumson, NJ) scored. However, 28
seconds later Skidmore had the lead back on a goal by freshman Alex
Radmin (Watchung, NJ) with 1:34 remaining until the first
intermission.
A scoreless second period saw 16 saves by Tufts goalie
Scott Barchard (Reading, MA). The Jumbos killed
off three Thoroughbred power-play chances in the middle stanza.
Out-played for most of the first two periods, trailing 33-18 in
shots, Tufts came alive in the third. Diaco would end up figuring
in all three Jumbo goals. He tied the score with his second of the
game and ninth of the season at 7:50 of the third period. He then
had an assist on the go-ahead goal by junior Mike Vitale
(Brookfield, IL) with 7:33 on the clock.
Hoping to notch their first league win since January 8, the
Jumbos would end up playing the final 4:09 of regulation time
short-handed due to a five-minute major penalty. Skidmore took
advantage of the situation, with Menard scoring from in front of
the cage to tie it at 3-3.
A major penalty does not release if a goal is scored, but the
Jumbos were able to kill off the rest of it including 51 seconds in
overtime. Tufts was more threatening in the extra period, putting
five shots on goal. Sophomore John Bienkowski (Lexington, MA)
stopped all of them to finish with 30 saves. Barchard finished with
41 at the other end for Tufts.
The tie ended a three-game Tufts losing streak against Skidmore.
The game-tying goal gave the visitors 1 for 5 success on
power-plays. Tufts was 0 for 3 with a man-advantage. Shots finished
44-33 in favor of Skidmore.
Tufts is off all week until hosting a NESCAC contest against
Wesleyan next Friday night (Feb. 5). Skidmore will do the same,
playing next on Friday when they host the University of New
England.
