MEDFORD - The Tufts University field hockey team opened its defense of the NESCAC title with a 4-1 victory against Bates College in the 2010 quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at Bello Field. Senior Tamara Brown (Annandale, VA) led Tufts with a hat trick, her third of the season.
The Jumbos, the #1 seed in the tournament, will host the semi-finals and championship game next weekend (Nov. 6-7) at Bello. Tufts will play Trinity at 11 am and Bowdoin will face Amherst at 1;30 pm in Saturday's semi-finals. The championship game will be played on Sunday at noon.
Against Bates, Tufts scored 10 minutes into the first half to get rolling. Senior co-captain Amanda Roberts (Wenham, MA) intercepted a Bates clear and dribbled the ball into the circle, passing to Brown for her first tally.
Tufts kept up the pressure and a shot by junior Lindsay Griffith (Wilminton, DE) hit the post. The hosts would score twice in the final two minutes of the first half to lead 3-0 at the break. Brown's second of the game unassisted came at the 2:00 mark. Griffith then scored with just four seconds remaining in the period when she capitalized on a loose ball at the left post with a tough-angle shot.
Less than three minutes into the second half, the Jumbos pushed their lead to 4-0 with Brown's third of the game and 23rd of the season. Sophomore Lia Sagerman (LaJolla, CA) made a strong drive to the goal along the left endline, put a shot on that was saved, collected the rebound and gave it to Brown for the hat-trick goal.
Bates, which didn't have a shot in the first half, pressured the Jumbo cage and eventually got on the scoreboard. Shots by senior Sema Kazarian (Providence, RI) and junior Lyndsay Beaton (West Newbury, MA) were saved by Tufts goalie Marianna Zak (Concord, MA). Senior Annie Wilson (Chagrin Falls, OH) later sent a pass from the right flank to the front of the goal. Kazarian didn't get good wood on the ball, but her shot popped into the air and over Zak's reach for a goal at 18:51 of the second half.
Tufts first year Chelsea Yogerst (San Diego, CA) would hit the post, and Bates eraned two corners in the final nine minutes, but there was no more scoring. Tufts, ranked fifth nationally, improved to 14-1 overall. Bates finished its season at 5-10.
Bobcat senior Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, DE) finished with 10 saves, while Zak made a pair of stops. The Jumbos had a 27-7 advantage in shots and 10-3 in corners.
