Sam Haney's 3,000-meters performance was one of the strongest on opening day for Tufts

BOSTON - The 2010-11 Tufts Unviersity men's track & field season opened on Saturday as the Jumbo indoor team competed at the Jay Carisella Invitational hosted by Northeastern University. In a meet featuring Division I, II and III competition, Tufts limbered up for the new year with several quality efforts.
The best finish for Coach Ethan Barron's squad came from senior co-captain Sam Read (Barkhamsted, CT), who was third in the pole vault with 14'11" (4.55m) clearance. Sophomore Gbola Ajayi (Lagos, Nigeria) reached 44'1 1/4" (13.44m) in the triple jump for eighth place. He also competed in the long jump, where he went 19'10 1/4" (6.05m).
Sophomore Michael Blair (Wellesley, MA) was successful at 6'4" (1.93m) in the high jump, earning a 12th place finish. In the 55 meters, sophomore Vinnie Lee (Walpole, MA) ran a solid season-opening time of 6.79 seconds. He was 24th out of 82 entrants in that event.
Sophomore Sam Haney (Essex, CT) finished in the top third of the 3,000 meters at 8:54.44, while senior Chris Brunnquell (Harrington Park, NJ) was 11th out of 65 in the 5k (15:21.90).
One of several freshmen making their collegiate debuts, Bobby McShane (Mansfield, MA) ran 4:28.71 in the mile to place 11th in a 60-man field.
The Dartmouth Relays in early January are next on the docket for Tufts.
