GORHAM, Me. -- For the second straight day, the Tufts hockey
team scored three third-period goals to overcome a deficit and win
on the road. As a result, they have clinched a spot in the upcoming
NESCAC Tournament.
On Friday night, Tufts won 4-2 at the University of New England
after they were down 2-1 entering the third. Today at Southern
Maine, the Jumbos won 5-3 after entering the third behind 3-2. They
got goals from freshman Trevor John (Grosse Pointe,
MI), junior Matt Amico (Buffalo, NY), and
junior tri-captain Dylan Cooper (Colorado Springs,
CO) in the final period to turn the game around.
Tufts improves to 11-8-3 overall and 7-7-3 in NESCAC/ECAC East
games. The 11 wins matches last year's total as the best for the
Jumbos since the 2004-05 squad won 12 games. This year's 25 points
overall and 17 in league play matches the 2004-05 team's points as
the most by a Tufts team since the program joined the NESCAC league
for the 2001-02 season. With at least three games remaining, the
2009-10 Jumbos have an opportunity to post the school's best season
of the NESCAC era.
The host Huskies (8-12-3, 5-9-3) got out to a 2-0 lead on a pair
of goals by Jon Rutt. The first came just 1:02 into the game and
the second with 3:01 remaining in the first came on a power play.
However, the Jumbos were able to score a power play goal of their
own with just two seconds left in the first, by junior Tom Derosa (Charlestown, MA), and it was 2-1.
Just 1:56 into the second period, Rutt had a hat trick with
another power play goal that put the Huskies up 3-1. Both teams
were clicking on the power play all afternoon. Tufts junior
Zach Diaco (Rumson, NJ) scored with a man
advantage, his 14th goal of the year, at 12:07 to pull the Jumbos
within a goal at 3-2. The Jumbos finished four for seven on the
man-advantage.
John, the talented freshman defenseman, tied the score for Tufts
with a power play goal assisted by Derosa 4:28 into the third.
Amico's eventual game winning goal came next at 8:06. The Jumbos
had to kill a penalty, but then had back-to-back power plays and
converted on the second with Cooper's insurance goal at 13:51 for a
5-3 lead. Tufts killed a penalty with under five minutes remaining
and held off the Husky attack with the goalie out of the net in the
final two minutes to record their third win in the last four games.
They are 3-1-2 in their last six.
Sophomore goalie Scott Barchard (Reading, MA)
made 20 of his 41 saves in the third period for Tufts. Cooper
(1-2-3), Derosa (1-1-2), and John (1-1-2) were multiple point
scorers for the visitors. Currently seventh in NESCAC, Tufts
finishes the regular season with home games against Saint Michaels
and Norwich next weekend. The conference tournament begins on
February 27.
Tim Gerrish had 24 saves in the Southern Maine net. Chris
Travils recorded two assists for the Huskies. The Huskies, who host
Wesleyan and Trinity next weekend, are winless in their last eight
games.
