MALDEN -- With a 7-2 victory at home against Saint Michael's
College on Friday night at Valley Forum II, the Tufts University
hockey team secured its most successful season since the Jumbo
program joined the NESCAC league in 2001. Junior Tom Derosa
(Charlestown, MA) led the way with a hat trick, his second
of the season.
The win improved Tufts to 12-8-3 overall. Those 27 points
surpass the 25 points earned by the 2004-05 team (12-12-1) as the
most for a Tufts squad during the NESCAC era. The Jumbos are now
8-7-3 in NESCAC/ECAC East games, locking up the seventh seed in the
upcoming conference tournament. The 19 points in league play are
also the most at Tufts during this span, surpassing 2004-05's
8-10-1 finish. This year's 12 total wins tie 2004-05 for the most
since 2000-01 (17), and the 23 victories in the past two seasons
(2008-10) are the most in back-to-back years since 1999-2001
(30).
All of these milestones were reached after Tufts broke a 1-1 tie
with three unanswered goals in the second period. The Jumbos, who
scored four power play goals in the game, had taken a 1-0 lead when
freshman defenseman Jared Barker (Ridgefield, CT)
scored his first collegiate goal on a blast from the point that was
screened during a power play just 1:17 into the game. The Purple
Knights tied the score at 1-1 with a power play goal of their own
at 14:05 by junior Nick Sheehan (Potsdam, NY), his eighth of the
season.
It was all Tufts from there. The Jumbos had an 18-6 advantage in
shots for the second period. Derosa scored twice, sandwiched around
a power play goal by junior Lindsay Walker (Castlegar,
BC), and Tufts led 4-1. Junior defenseman Andy Davis (Woburn, MA) had two of his three assists in the
game during the middle stanza.
Derosa's third of the game and 13th of the year started another
three-goal period in the third for Tufts. Junior Zach Diaco
(Rumson, NJ) tallied his team-high 15th and sophomore
Evan Story (Shaker Heights, OH) pushed the Tufts
lead to 7-1 with 5:48 remaining. Saint Michael's broke the six-goal
Jumbo run on the first goal of the season by senior Dave
Vorozilchak (Clarks Summit, PA) with 2:32 on the clock.
In addition to Derosa and Davis, Diaco (goal, two assists) and
junior Mike Vitale (Brookfield, IL) with two
assists had multiple points for Tufts. Sophomore goalie
Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) had his easiest
outing of the season, making 25 saves in 55 minutes before he was
replaced by sophomore Evin Koleini (Clarence, NY)
with five minutes remaining.
Junior goalie Brendan Rimmer (Newbury, MA) played all 60 minutes
and finished with 39 saves for Saint Michael's. The Purple Knights
scored two man-advantage goals in a game that was marred by 27
penalties, including four misconducts.
Tufts finishes its regular-season at home tomorrow against #2 in
the nation Norwich on Seniors Day beginning at 3 pm. Saint
Michael's plays tomorrow at Connecticut College also starting at 3
pm.
