BOSTON -- The Tufts men's indoor track & field team's 4x800
meters relay foursome smashed the school record at the 2010 All-New
England Championships hosted by Boston University on Friday and
Saturday. That was the top performance for Coach Ethan Barron's
Jumbos, who tied for 17th at the meet with 17 points.
The Jumbo 4x8 of senior Jason Hanrahan (Westport,
CT), freshman Jeff Marvel (Naples, FL),
senior quad-captain Billy Hale (Menlo Park, CA),
and freshman Dan Kirschner (Short Hills, NJ)
blazed a time of 7:42.67 that broke a 25-year old Tufts record. The
previous mark of 7:48.7 was from 1985. Tufts was second at the meet
on Saturday, behind only UConn.
Senior Matt Tirrell (Burlington, MA) had an
outstanding effort in the finals of the 1,000 meters on Saturday.
After finishing as the ninth of 10 qualifiers in the prelims on
Friday with a 2:30.92 time, he crossed the finish line a full
second faster in the finals with a 2:29.90 time for third place
overall.
A pair of freshmen added points to the Tufts score.
Gbola Ajayi (Lagos, Nigeria) was seventh in the
triple jump on Saturday, reaching 45' 1/4" (13.72m). On Friday in
the 5,000 meters, Matt Rand (Cape Elizabeth, ME)
placed eighth with a 14:52.70 time. Though the time itself is an
NCAA provisional mark, it is adjusted by 3.6 seconds due to the
banked track at BU and does not qualify.
Seniors Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) and
Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA) had good
performances as well. Engelking's time of 7.74 seconds in the
semi-finals of the 55-meter hurdles was an NCAA provisional
qualifier, though he already has a faster mark. Faller was the
first Division III finisher in the 3,000 meters (8:29.06) and ninth
overall, just missing a scoring place.
The Jumbos were fifth among Division III teams at the meet.
UConn won the overall team title with 140 points.
Tufts is at Smith College next Friday and Saturday (Mar. 5-6)
for the ECAC Championships.
