GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Senior quad-captain Jared Engelking
(Westborough, MA) and classmate Jesse Faller
(Burlington, MA) of the Tufts University men's indoor
track & field team earned All-American honors with their
performances at the 2010 NCAA Championships hosted by DePauw
University this weekend. On Saturday in the 5,000 meter run, Faller
finished in third place with a 14:50.39 time. On Friday, Engelking
placed seventh in the pentathlon by scoring 3,491 points.
Both Jumbos are now multiple All-American recipients for their
careers. Faller is a three-time All-American at the NCAA Indoor
meet. He was a member of last year's distance medley relay (DMR)
which finished third at the 2009 NCAA Indoor meet with a 10:04.25
time. In addition to the DMR last year, he was fourth in the 5,000
meters with a 14:35.46 time. Including three cross country
All-American performances, Faller now has six All-American honors
in his Tufts running career. Engelking earned his second
All-American award. At the NCAA Outdoor Championships last spring,
he placed third in the decathlon scoring 6,834 points for
All-American honors.
Faller's third-place in the 5K on Saturday is his best NCAA
finish individually. The 14:50.39 time was less than three seconds
behind national champion Kyle Brady from North Central College, who
won the race with a 14:47.97 time. Faller crossed the finish line
sixth-tenths of a second ahead of Amherst's Daniel Murner, who was
fourth (14:51.01). Faller had qualified for the NCAA 5K with a
14:34.07 time that was seeded seventh entering Nationals, giving
him an improvement of four spots in the final. The regular-season
qualifying time was converted from his 14:30.47 at the
season-opening Husky Carnival on December 5, held on Northeastern
University's banked track. Faller has also been an NCAA 5K
qualifier outdoors in 2009 and 2008.
Engelking's final score of 3,491 points on Friday included 891
points in the 55-meter hurdles, for which he placed second with a
time of 7.77 seconds. He added 757 points in the 1,000 meter run,
which he finished with a 2:50.85 time. Engelking had been the final
qualifier in the 12-man pentathlon field, giving him an improvement
of five places at the NCAA meet. His 3,529 qualifying score won him
the ECAC Championship on March 5 at Smith College.
Also on Friday, the Tufts distance medley relay (DMR) took ninth
place at the NCAA meet with a 10:13.93 time. They were one spot shy
of All-American honors for each runner. The DMR foursome was
freshman Sam Haney (Essex, CT), sophomore
Ben Crastnopol (Doylestown, PA), senior
quad-captain Billy Hale (Menlo Park, CA), and
Faller. Tufts had qualified in the event at the last moment,
running a 9:59.97 time (converted from 9:56.97) at the IC4A
Championships hosted by Boston University last Saturday.
With the six points scored by Faller and two from Engelking,
Tufts tied for 27th at the NCAA meet with eight points. North
Central's 52.3 points won the 2010 national championship.
