WELLESLEY -- The visiting Tufts University women's lacrosse team, ranked 13th in the nation, handed Wellesley College a 13-5 loss on Tuesday afternoon in Wellesley. The Jumbos pick up their first win of 2010, moving to 1-1, while the Blue fall to 1-2 this season.

Wellesley jumped out to an early lead as Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) needed just 26 seconds to convert a Jenny Holland (Bethesda, MD) pass into a 1-0 Wellesley advantage. The upset was not in the cards today however, as Tufts answered back a minute later when senior co-captain Jenna Abelli (Framingham, MA) tied the game at 1-1. The Jumbos took over from that point on, scoring the next seven goals of the half to take an 8-1 lead into the break.

Sophomore Casey Egan (Massapequa, NY) led Tufts with three first half scores, while senior Emily Johnson (Yarmouth, ME) added a pair. Also scoring for the Jumbos were sophomores Steph Perez (East Providence, RI) and Lara Kozin (Suffern, NY), as Tufts out-shot Wellesley 20-6 in the period.

Wellesley opened the second half just like the first, scoring the initial goal. Allison Robbins (North Bennington, VT) picked up the score for the Blue, off of a Morrow assist, cutting the Tufts lead to 8-2. The Jumbos answered with a pair of scores to make it 10-2, but Wellesley responded with two of its own, setting the score to 10-4 with 16:55 to play.

After six scoreless minutes, Tufts put the nail in the coffin, as Perez, Abelli and Johnson scored back-to-back-to-back and put the game out of reach. Wellesley's Morrow would add a free-position score with 6:00 to play, but the Blue couldn't creep back, suffering the 13-5 defeat.

Overall, Tufts held a 27-15 advantage in shots to go along with a 28-15 edge in ground balls. Draw controls were nearly even with Tufts picking up 10 to Wellesley's 9. Tufts also forced 23 Blue turnovers.

For the Jumbos, Egan finished the afternoon with four goals, while Abelli scored three with an assist for four total points. Johnson, Perez and Kozin all recorded three points each. Abelli also led the team defensively with five ground balls, three draw controls and four caused turnovers. Junior Sara Bloom (Summit, NJ) made six saves in goal for the victory.

Wellesley was paced by Morrow's two goals and two assists while Holland added two scores and one helper. Morrow also recorded four draw controls while Nicole Labbee (Florence, MA) and goalie Mary Mattia (Atlanta, GA) each picked up three ground balls. Mattia made 11 saves in the game.

Tufts is back in action on Saturday at noon, hosting Colby in a NESCAC match-up. Wellesley starts a three-game road trip on Thursday at Bridgewater State at 4:00 pm.
