CONWAY, S.C. -- Fresh off an All-American performance in the
pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend, senior
Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) traveled with
the rest of the Tufts men's track & field team to South
Carolina this week to open the 2010 outdoor season at Coastal
Carolina University's Shamrock Invitational. Prepping for the
decathlon, Engelking competed in several events and ran an NCAA
provisional qualifying time of 14.61 seconds in the 110-meter
hurdles.
While also competing in the javelin, discus, and pole vault,
Engelking's sixth-place finish in the 110 hurdles was the top Tufts
finish at the meet. He ran a time of 14.7 seconds in the
preliminaries, the eighth best of 16 qualifiers for the final. The
NCAA provisional mark is 14.88 seconds. He improved his time in the
finals. Engelking also threw the javelin 174'6" (53.20m), heaved
the discus 134'9" (41.08m), and cleared 14'7 1/4" (4.45m) in the
pole vault. He was 17th in both throws, and eighth in the PV.
Among several Jumbos who made the trip, junior Jeff Ragazzini (Wilton, CT) produced two top-15 finishes. He
was ninth in the 1,500 meters with a 4:04.22 finishing time. In the
5,000 meters, he crossed the finish line in 15:29.19 for 14th
place. In the 800 meters, NCAA Indoors competitor Billy Hale (Menlo Park, CA) ran 1:56.62 for 11th place and
senior Jason Hanrahan (Westport, CT) was 15th
(1:57.64).
