LYNCHBURG, Va. -- In its 2010 season opener, the Tufts
University baseball team pounded out 17 hits as the Jumbos ended
Lynchburg's five-game winning streak with a 15-11 win over the
Hornets in non-conference play from Fox Field Friday.
The Jumbos were paced by junior 2B Frank Petroskey
(Dallas, TX), a transfer from Vermont, who went 3 for 4
with three runs in his first game for Tufts. Junior shortstop
David LeResche (St. Louis, MO) was 3 for 5 with
two runs and two RBI in the lead-off spot, while junior CF
David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) and sophomore 3B
Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) also added three
hits.
The Jumbos (1-0) opened up a 3-0 lead on the Hornets, scoring
one run in the first and two in the second. LC (11-4) responded
with three runs in the third inning to tie the score at three, and
took its first advantage in the third on a Brock Shiflett
(Richmond, VA) homer, the first of his career. Tufts regained the
lead with two runs in the fourth inning, as Orlowitz singled in a
pair of runs off of LC starter Zac Patrick (Midlothian, VA) for a
5-4 Jumbo lead.
LC retied the game at five in the sixth inning, but the Jumbos
scored three in the seventh inning and seven runs in the top of the
ninth to take a 15-6 bulge. Junior LF Ben Walkley
(Trumbull, CT) doubled home two runs in the seventh.
Junior RF Chase Rose (Scottsdale, AZ) smacked a
two-run double in the ninth.
The Hornets battled though and scored five runs in the bottom
half of the ninth, and had a chance to tie the game with the bases
loaded with two outs. However, Tufts junior Pat O'Donnell
(Worcester, MA) came on and got a ground-ball out to
record the save.
Lynchburg was led by Shiflett, who was 4 for 5 with three runs
and two RBI, while Richie Palase (Staten Island, NY) continued his
scorching play of late with a 3 for 3 day, scoring three times to
go with three RBI and two stolen bases. Palase is now nine for his
last 13 with six runs and nine RBI. Junior Chris Colquhoun
(Virginia Beach, VA) was 3 for 6 with two runs scored for LC, who
dropped its first game to Tufts in three years. Freshman Dan Savage
(Ashburn, VA) was 2 for 3 while Jordan Watkins (Freeland,
MD/Hereford) added two hits in four at bats for Lynchburg.
Sophomore Dave Ryan (Trumbull, CT) got the
opening day start for Tufts, the first start of his career. He
allowed eight hits and four runs in five innings.
The Jumbos continue their spring break trip at Washington &
Lee University on Sunday at 1:00 pm. Lynchburg finishes its
six-game week tomorrow afternoon, as it travels to Harrisonburg,
Virginia to take on Eastern Mennonite University in conference play
starting at 1 pm.
