HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Trailing 6-2 after one period and 9-7 at
halftime, the ninth ranked Tufts University men's lacrosse team
rallied to win 15-10 against Skidmore College on Wednesday night
under the lights at Hofstra University's Shuart Stadium. Coach Mike
Daly's Jumbos, traveling on spring break, remain undefeated (4-0)
in 2010 with the victory.
The Jumbos out-scored the Thoroughbreds 8-1 in the second half
to get control of the game. Sophomore Kevin McCormick
(Laytonsville, MD) scored twice and had an assist in the
third quarter to give Tufts a 10-9 lead. In the fourth, Tufts got
goals from five different players to put away the win. Junior
goalie Bryan Petillo (Holbrook, NY), who had
entered for the third quarter, made four of his six saves in the
fourth.
Junior D.J. Hessler (Monkton, MD) and McCormick
both finished with two goals and two assists for the 'Bos, while
junior Ryan Molloy (Setauket, NY) had a goal and
three assists. Sophomore Sean Kirwin (Boonton Township,
NJ) had three goals. Matt Levesque and Rob Lutin both had
three goals for Skidmore, which dropped to 4-2.
The Thoroughbreds scored twice in the last 11 seconds of the
first period to take a 6-2 advantage. Levesque and Cory Barkoff
both had a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes. Tufts got the
next three in a row to start the second, with a goal and an assist
by Molloy, and it was 6-5. Barkoff assisted back-to-back goals by
Skidmore late in the third to give them a 9-6 lead, but senior
tri-captain Mike Droesch (Setauket, NY) scored
with 1:10 to go until halftime to pull the Jumbos within 9-7.
Sophomore Nick Rhoads (McLean, VA) won 14
face-offs, had 10 ground balls, and scored a goal and an assist for
Tufts. Junior long-stick middie Alec Bialosky (Moreland
Hills, OH) scooped up six ground balls for the winners,
who won that battle 49-44 overall. Tufts also had a 42-38 edge in
shots.
Ryan Paradis won 12 face-offs and had 10 ground balls for
Skidmore. Jacques Ward added six ground balls. Flip Bongaerts made
seven saves in the Thoroughbred goal.
Tufts returns home to host a NESCAC game against Williams
College on Saturday at 1 pm. Skidmore is off for a week before
playing at RPI next Wednesday (Mar. 31).
