MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The Tufts University women's tennis team put
up a good fight in a 7-4 loss to Division I Cornell University
during a match played at Florida Institute of Technology on Friday
afternoon. The contest was the last of the team's spring break trip
to Florida. Due to an agreement by the coaches, the match was
scored best out of 11 with seven singles matches and four doubles
contests.
Cornell swept the four doubles matches, with the bottom two
finishing closely. Cornell's Kirsten Kohagen and Ruxandra
Dumitrescu needed a tie-breakerer to knock off Jumbos
Edwina Stewart (London, ENG) and first year
Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) in the #3 match. On
the fourth doubles court, Leah Seyburn and Geraldine Leong won 9-7
over Tufts junior Hillary Rosen (East Brunswick,
NJ) and senior tri-captain Laura Hoguet
(Cincinnati, OH).
The Big Red clinched the match by winning four of the top five
singles matches. Tufts junior Julia Browne (Old Brookville,
NY) improved to 4-1 on the team's challenging Florida trip
with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Natalia Sanchez in the #1 match.
Kristin Lim won the #3 match for Cornell in two tie-breakers. Lower
in the order, Jumbo first years Janice Lam (San Francisco,
CA) and Hollender won third-set super tie-breakers to
capture the #5 and #6 matches, respectively. Sophomore
Jennifer LaCara (Huntington Station, NY) also won
for Tufts.
The Jumbos, 4-3 overall, head home and will open their NESCAC
schedule on April 3 with matches in Maine against Colby and Bates.
Cornell also heads home soon and will play an Ivy League match at
Columbia next Wednesday (Mar. 31).
