MEDFORD -- The Tufts University baseball team scored three runs
without a hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to go from
trailing 8-7 to winning 10-8 against Colby College in the opener of
a three-game NESCAC East Division series on Saturday afternoon at
Huskins Field.
The visiting Mules had an 8-4 lead in the game thanks to a
five-run fifth inning. In that frame, senior co-captain Ryan Conlon
(Ridgefield, CT) singled home a run and scored, sophomore 3B Mike
Mastrocola (Soutbury, CT) doubled home a run and scored, and senor
2B John LaMantia (Gates Mills, OH) had an RBI single and
scored.
Tufts battled back to 8-7 with three runs in the sixth. Junior
2B Frank Petroskey (Dallas, TX) struck the big
blow with a two-run single.
After Tufts junior reliever Ed Bernstein (Foxborough,
MA) came on and got the Jumbos out of a jam in the top of
the eighth, Colby pitchers hit four Jumbo batters with pitches and
walked two others during the bottom of the eighth. Junior LF
Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL) was hit by a pitch
to force in the tying run, and sophomore 3B Sam Sager
(Cranston, RI) worked a walk to bring in the game-winning
ninth run.
Goldberg's two-run double to left-center in the third had given
the Jumbos a 4-2 lead. He finished the day 2 for 4 with three RBI
and a run scored. Petroskey was 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run out
of the ninth spot. Junior CF David Orlowitz (Wakefield,
MA) was 2 for 4 and scored two runs for Tufts.
Colby out-hit the Jumbos 16-10. Conlon was 3 for 5 with two RBI
and a run, Mastrocola went 2 for 5 with two RBI and a run,
sophomore SS Brandon Nieuw (Port Chester, NY) finished 2 for 5 with
two runs and an RBI, and senior LF Ken Kaufman (Lexington, MA) was
2 for 5 with a run and an RBI.
Bernstein got the win for Tufts, which improved to 13-3 overall
and 3-1 in the NESCAC East. Sophomore Chris DeGoti (Miami,
FL) secured his fifth save, allowing just a two-out single
in the ninth. The Jumbos have won nine out of their last 10.
Freshman Nathaniel Sugarbaker (Milton, MA) took the loss for
Colby, which dropped to 9-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference. A
six-game winning streak by the Mules came to an end.
The teams will play a double-header tomorrow at Huskins
beginning at noon.
