MEDFORD -- The Tufts University baseball team held Colby College
to one run in each game as the Jumbos swept a doubleheader against
the Mules in NESCAC East Division action on Sunday afternoon at
Huskins Field. Tufts won a tight 2-1 game in the opener, and then
routed Colby 11-1 in the nightcap.
The Jumbos sit atop the NESCAC East with a 5-1 mark. Coach John
Casey's team has won 11 out of 12 overall to improve to 15-3.
Colby, which gave the Jumbos a run for their money in two of the
three games, dropped to 9-8 overall and 0-6 in the NESCAC East.
In game one's seven-inning pitcher's duel, the Jumbos got five
strong innings from junior starter Derek Miller (Whitman,
MA) and Colby junior Dominick Morrill (South Thomaston,
ME) went the distance. Jumbo relievers Ed Bernstein
(Foxborough, MA) and sophomore Chris DeGoti
(Miami, FL) both pitched scoreless innings, with DeGoti
earning his sixth save.
The Jumbos took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when
senior SS David LeResche (St. Louis, MO) led off
with a walk, stole second, and scored on a single by second batter
Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL). Tufts went up 2-0
in the third after two were out, as junior DH Ben Walkley
(Trumbull, CT) hit a double and scored on a single by
senior 1B Nate Bankoff (Lynnfield, MA).
Colby had squandered a one-out double by junior RF Richard
Newton (Arlington, MA) in the first, and another two-bagger by
senior 2B John LaMantia (Gates Mills, OH) with no outs in the
fourth. The Mules broke through after freshman catcher John
Schroeder (Glencoe, IL) led off the fifth with a walk. He later
scored on a single by senior 1B Ryan Conlon (Ridgefield, CT).
Morrill allowed six hits and two runs while walking four and
striking out eight in six innings for Colby. Tufts' Miller allowed
six hits and one run with four K's and two walks in his five
innings. Colby got the tying run to third base with two outs in the
top of the seventh against DeGoti, but he finished it off with a
ground out.
Colby out-hit the Jumbos for the second straight game 9-6, with
Conlon finishing 3 for 4 and LaMantia 3 for 3.
In game two, Tufts junior starter Pat O'Donnell
(Worcester, MA) shut out the Mules for seven innings
before allowing a run in the eighth. He finished with seven hits
and two walks allowed while striking out three and improving his
record to 3-1.
The Jumbos offense scored early and often. A two-run double down
the left field line by Walkley keyed a three-run first. Sophomore
3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) smashed a solo home
run in the third when Tufts scored twice. Junior 2B Frank
Petroskey (Dallas, TX) tripled to lead off the fourth and
scored. A four-run sixth inning was highlighted by at two-run,
pinch-hit double to center by senior Caleb Sims
(Burlington, MA).
Tufts had 12 hits against five Colby pitchers. Sager went 2 for
3 with three runs scored and an RBI, and Walkley finished 2 for 2
with four RBI and three runs scored.
The Jumbos are off until hosting an important NESCAC East series
against Trinity next weekend (Apr. 16-17) at Huskins Field. The
Mules host Southern Maine on Wednesday.
