MEDFORD -- The Tufts University baseball team rattled UMass
Dartmouth pitching for 36 hits in two seven-inning games as the
Jumbos swept a doubleheader against the Corsairs by 17-3 and 10-6
scores on Monday afternoon at Huskins Field.
Tufts, which had all of its hits and scored a combined 27 runs
in 12 innings of at-bats, improved to 19-3 overall with the sweep.
Coach John Casey's Jumbos have won 15 of their last 16. UMass
Dartmouth, from the Little East Conference, fell to 14-11
overall.
Sophomore Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA), who
played first base in the first game and caught the second game,
finished the twin bill 4 for 5 with two home runs, six RBI, and
five runs scored. Junior CF David Orlowitz (Wakefield,
MA) also homered in both games for the Jumbos and was a
combined 4 for 8 with five runs scored and four RBI. Six Tufts
players overall had four hits on the day, which also included a 4
for 7 performance with five RBI from junior RF Chase Rose
(Scottsdale, AZ).
The Jumbos sent 16 batters to the plate in the second inning of
game one and scored 10 runs. Nine of the runs scored after two were
out. Eleven straight Tufts hitters reached base during one stretch.
Rose hit a three-run double and Orlowitz smashed a three-run home
run.
A UMass Dartmouth rally in the third knocked Tufts starter
Dave Ryan (Trumbull, CT) out of the game. Junior
catcher Zak Talis (Lynnfield, MA) hit an RBI double, and junior DH
Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA) followed with a run-scoring single. Down
10-2, the Corsairs later had the bases loaded, but Tufts freshman
reliever Alex Cronkite (Palos Verdes Estates, CA)
induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Cronkite was credited with the victory after pitching 4.2
innings allowing four hits and one run with no walks and two
strikeouts. UMD's Matt Ryan hit a solo shot off him in the fifth.
Tufts had a five-run fifth inning that was highlighted by a two-run
home run from Collins.
The Jumbos had 19 hits in the first game, led by Rose at 4 for 5
with five RBI. Matt Ryan, 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBI,
was the offensive leader for UMD.
The Corsairs got out on top in the second game 2-0 in the top of
the first, which included an RBI double by Talis. The Jumbos
answered with three in the bottom of the inning, including a solo
homer by Orlowitz. Collins hit a two-run bomb in the second, and
then he hit an RBI double during a two-run third and Tufts led
7-2.
UMass Dartmouth closed within 7-4 by scoring a pair of runs in
the fourth. Sophomore 2B Dan DeMello had an RBI single. The
Corsairs had the potential tying run at the plate later in the
inning, but a ground out ended the rally.
The Jumbos, who scored in every inning of game two, and in 10 of
the 12 innings that they hit for the day, added single runs in the
fourth, fifth, and sixth. Senior DH Corey Pontes (Milton,
MA) knocked home a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth
and then led off the sixth with a single and scored.
UMass Dartmouth scored two unearned runs in the top of the
seventh, with freshman RF Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA) producing
an RBI single.
Among Tufts' 17 hits in the nightcap, Pontes was 2 for 3 with
two runs and an RBI. Junior LF Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest,
IL) finished 3 for 4 with two RBI and a run. Junior SS
David LeResche (St. Louis, MO) was 2 for 2 with
two runs and an RBI at the top of the order. The Jumbos used six
pitchers in short stints for the game, with junior starter
Tom Hill (Robbinsville, NJ) getting the win to
improve to 4-0.
Talis and DeMello had two hits each to lead the Corsairs in the
second game, while senior CF Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA) scored
twice.
Tufts will look to clinch first place in the NESCAC East
Division this weekend (Apr. 23-24) when they play three games at
