SOMERVILLE -- With a strong performance as the championship
season began, the Tufts University men's outdoor track & field
team hosted and finished as the runner-up at the 2010 New England
Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championships at
Dussault Track on Saturday. Coach Ethan Barron's team won five
events.
The Jumbos finished the 21 conference championship events with a
total of 155.50 points scored, well ahead of third place Bates
(129). Williams College won the team title with 167.70 points.
The Jumbo pair of seniors Jared Engelking (Westborough,
MA) and Trevor Donadt (Northborough, MA)
swept the hurdle events. Engelking won the 110 for the second
straight year with a time of 14.62 seconds. That was just 0.04 shy
of the conference record. Donadt, who was second in the 110 (14.98
seconds), won the 400 meter hurdles in 53.97 seconds. That snuck
under the 54.30 NCAA provisional mark.
Freshmen Michael Blair (Wellesley, MA) and
Brad Nakanishi (Scarborough, ME) stepped up and
provided 10-point victories to the Tufts total. Blair topped a
competitive high jump event with his best of 6'3 1/4" (1.91m).
Nakanishi popped a 15'2 3/4" (4.64m) in the pole vault to beat the
rest of the field by six inches.
Tufts also had the fastest foursome at the meet, winning the
4x100-meter relay in 42.95 seconds. Freshman Vinnie Lee
(Walpole, MA), senior Marc Soskin (Minnetonka,
MN), freshman Gbola Ajayi (Lagos,
Nigeria) and freshman Lomie Cunningham (Bergen,
NJ) were the speedy relay. Tufts also got runner-up
finishes in the sprints from Soskin and Lee. Soskin ran 11.27
seconds in the 100 and Lee crossed the 200 finish line in 22.58
seconds.
Senior Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA) was edged
in the 5,000 meters (14:53.91). Senior Isaiah Paramore
(Charlotte, NC) added another second in the long jump,
going 22'4 1/2" (6.82m).
Tufts continues its championship season home-stand next weekend
(Apr. 30-May 1) when the host the New England Division III
Championships at Dussault Track.
