MEDFORD -- Visiting Eastern Connecticut State University scored
early and often on their way to earning a 19-5 victory at Tufts in
non-conference college baseball action on a dreary Tuesday
afternoon at Huskins Field. The Warriors finished with 19 hits and
took advantage of five errors and five wild pitches by Tufts.
Eastern (24-8) was led by senior 3B Melvin Castillo (Danbury,
CT), who finished 3 for 6 with four RBI and three runs scored.
Junior catcher Chris Cannata (Southington, CT) was 3 for 5 with
four runs scored and two RBI. At the top of the order, senior 2B
John Parke (Middlefield, CT) had a 3 for 4 game with three runs
scored and three RBI. The Warriors won their fifth straight.
The visitors hit three home runs in the game. A two-run shot by
junior 1B Andrew Dewing (Swampscott, MA) highlighted a three-run
first inning. Castillo launched a two-run home run as the
centerpiece of a five-run second inning that gave the Warriors an
early 8-0 lead.
Amidst all the offense, Eastern senior pitcher Will Musson
(Wethersfield, CT) tossed seven solid innings allowing four hits
and two earned runs. He struck out five and walked four while
improving to 4-0 with the victory.
Tufts (21-5) had managed to cut the deficit to 8-4 with three
runs in the second and another in the third. Junior RF Ben
Walkley (Trumbull, CT) had a double to deep center scoring
the run in the third.
A two-run home run by Cannata in the top of the fifth put the
Warriors up 12-4. They added four more runs in the seventh,
including a two-run double by Parke. In a three-run eighth inning,
Parke tripled home a run and later scored.
Tufts added a run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double by
junior RF Chase Rose (Scottsdale, AZ). The Jumbos
finished with eight hits, as Walkley and sophomore 3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) had two apiece.
The Jumbos have an opportunity to erase this one quickly as they
host Newbury College tomorrow at Huskins beginning at 3 pm. ECSU
plays at Manhattanville tomorrow at 3 pm.
