2010 New England decathlon champ Jared Engelking

DEDHAM -- Senior Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) of the Tufts University men's outdoor track & field team won the decathlon at the 2010 All-New England Championships hosted by Northeastern University from Thursday through Saturday. He became the second straight Jumbo to win the All-New England decathlon, following former teammate Skip Pagel's victory last year.

Engelking scored 6,587 points to improve his NCAA qualifying mark to sixth-best in the nation as of tonight. He won the title by more than 300 points over the rest of the field. Engelking scored 840 points with a time of 15.08 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles. He totaled 759 points in the 400 meters with a time of 51.23 seconds. The quad-captain won four of the 10 events, also including the discus throw and the pole vault. Freshman Michael Blair (Wellesley, MA) was eighth in the decathlon with 5,178 points.

Another impressive performance came from senior Trevor Donadt (Northborough, MA), whose time of 53.60 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles vastly improves his NCAA provisional mark into the top 10 in the nation. He was fourth at the meet. Freshman Matt Rand (Cape Elizabeth, ME) scored six third-place points with his 31:31.79 time in the 10,000 meters.

The 4x800 meter relay placed fifth in 7:44.47, with an order of senior Billy Hale (Menlo Park, CA), senior Jason Hanrahan (Westport, CT), freshman Jeff Marvel (Naples, FL), and senior Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA). Because Tufts had never competed in the event outdoors, the time is a school record. Senior Ryan Lena (Orono, ME) scored a point by finishing eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:26.93).

The Jumbos scored 27 points overall to place 12th at the meet, the best spot in three years. Rhode Island won the team title with 95.33 points.
