SPRINGFIELD - Despite not winning an event, the Tufts men's indoor track & field team finished second out of eight teams at the Springfield Invitational on Saturday. Coach Ethan Barron's Jumbos scored 99 points to out-distance the host Pride, who finished at 92.
The Jumbos showed their scoring power at the meet. Only six events featured Tufts finishers in the top three. MIT won the invitational by a landslide with a 215 score.
Tufts was the runner-up in four events. Sophomore Sam Haney (Essex, CT) ran the 1,000 in 2:35.28. He then led off the 4x800 relay that placed second with an 8:10.99 finish. His relay mates were sophomore Jeff Marvel (Naples, FL), freshman Bobby McShane (Mansfield, MA) and sophomore Adam Brosh (Agoura Hills, CA).
Sophomore pole vaulter Brad Nakanishi (Scarborough, ME) continued his early-season success with a second place, making it over the 14'11" (4.55m) bar. Freshman Ben Wallis (Dover, NH) was second-best in the 5,000 meter run at 15:23.63.
A pair of thirds were earned by Marvel in the 800 meters (1:59.81) and freshman Jamie Norton (Groton, MA) in the mile (4:28.67). Marvel was followed by McShane in the 8 (2:00.07) as Tufts scored 11 points in the event. Norton led a group of four milers in the top eight that scored 15 points for the Jumbos.
Senior Sam Read (Barkhamsted, CT) supported Nakanishi in the pole vault with 14'5 1/4" (4.40m) clearance. Sophomore Vinnie Lee (Walpole, MA) added seven points with scoring finishes in the 55 and 200 dashes.
Tufts competes at the annual Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University next Friday.
