BOSTON/BRUNSWICK, Me. - The Tufts men's indoor track and field team competed at Boston University's annual Terrier Invitational and at the Bowdoin Invitational this weekend. Four victories by Jumbos highlighted the competition up in Maine.
Jumbos were at the large BU meet on Friday and Saturday. The distance medley relay of freshman Brian McLaughlin (Barrington, RI), freshman Graham Beutler (Weston, CT), sophomore Jeff Marvel (Naples, FL) and sophomore Sam Haney (Essex, CT) combined for a 10:12.82 time on Friday.
McLaughlin made the trip to Bowdoin on Saturday as well and won the 3,000 meters race by a second over Stan Berkow from the host team with a 8:52.89 finish. Another first came from freshman Daniel Lange-Vagle (St. Paul, MN) in the 55 hurdles, where he out-legged Springfield's Sam Weiss 8.51 to 8.53.
A veteran presence was also at the top of two events for Tufts at Bowdon. Senior co-captain Sam Read (Barkhamsted, CT) out-dueled teammate Brad Nakanishi (Scarborough, ME) to win the pole vault with 14'5 1/4" (4.40m) clearance. In the weight throw, senior Alex Gresham (Milton, MA) led Tufts' 1-2-3 finish with a winning heave of 47'1 1/2" (14.36m).
The Jumbos lined up second-place finishes in the 600, 800 and 1,000 meter events. Haney's 2:00.18 in the 800, a 1:23.94 by junior Connor Rose (Irvine, CA) in the 600 and freshman Jamie Norton's (Groton, MA) 2:32.14 1,000 were all runner-up efforts. In the jumps, sophomore Gbola Ajayi (Lagos, Nigeria) added another second by long jumping 21'2 1/2" (6.46m).
Tufts' Gantcher Center opens its doors for the second invitational of the season next Friday (multi) and Saturday.
