Orchowski is MVP as Jumbo Men's Basketball Wins Charlie Ryan Classic Championship

Waterville, ME — The Tufts University Jumbos took home the championship of the Charlie Ryan

Senior Alex Orchowski was named tournament MVP

Classic with an 84-71 triumph over the Thomas College Terriers on Saturday afternoon at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.

Tufts built an early seven-point lead less than three minutes in the contest backed by four points from senior Alex Orchowski (Cornwall, NY) and a three-pointer from senior Amauris Quezada (New York, NY). The Terriers fought back to grab their first advantage at the 14:03 mark on a basket from sophmore Franklin Salvador (Somerville, MA), 23-22.

The lead would bounce around until the game was tied at 30 and then junior Scott Anderson (Sudbury, MA) gave the Jumbos the lead for good at 7:28 of the first half. Tufts built its lead up to nine at 43-34 on back-to-back buckets from sophomore Tom Folliard (Richmond, VA). The Terriers recorded five straight points as Tufts led at the half, 43-39.

Sophomore Stanley Greene, Jr. (Dorchester, MA) got the Terriers within two to begin the second half, but that would be the closest they would get the rest of the way. Tufts went on an 8-0 run over a three-minute span to go back up by 10 at 51-41.

Tufts would push its largest lead of the game to 17 at the 6:52 mark at 72-55 before coasting to the 13-point victory.

Orchowski led the Jumbos with a double-double at 17 points and 11 rebounds. For his efforts over the weekend, he earned MVP honors for the tournament. Four other Jumbos scored in double digts. Anderson (12 points and 11 rebounds) and sophomore Kwame Firempong (Inglewood, CA) (10 points and 10 rebounds) also had double-doubles. Folliard and senior James Long (Norwell, MA) had 14 and 13 points respectively.

Firempong also added six assists in 33 minutes of play.

Greene, Jr. finished with a team-high 22 points for the Terriers.

Tufts, now 2-0 on the season, returns to action for its home opener on Tuesday night at 7 pm against Regis College.
