MIDDLETOWN, CT - Tufts University pulled out to a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes of play and held off a third-period charge by homestanding Wesleyan University to complete a 2-0 NESCAC weekend in Connecticut with a 3-2 win over the Cardinals on Saturday.
The Jumbos defeated Trinity College in its season opener Friday, 4-1. Seven players contributed to the Jumbos' scoring at Wesleyan, with only freshman Andrew White (Rockland, MA) securing multiple points with a pair of assists.
Tufts scored all its goals during the middle stanza in a span of 7:18. Both sophomore Kyle Gallegos (Westminster, CO) and freshman Derrek Schartz (Plano, TX) scored, with Gallegos breaking the scoreless tie at 12:41 tallying off a rebound. Schartz made it 2-0 just 1:31 later, finding room low between the pads of Wesleyan junior goalie Matt Hadge after getting control of the puck in the neutral zone and moving into the offensive end against a lone Cardinal defender. The lead grew to 3-0 when junior Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ) netted his second goal of the season just one second before the end of the stanza on a fast break with his squad short-handed.
Wesleyan got a pair back as junior John Guay scored twice in the third period, the first on a rebound at 7:33 and the second at 19:15 as the Cardinals skated with an extra attacker, having pulled Hadge with 1:45 to play. Hadge remained in the net during the final 0:45 as the Cardinals could not sustain pressure in the offensive end.
Tufts senior goalie Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) collected 27 saves in the contest while Hadge finished with 25.
Tufts returns to action on Tuesday with a non-league game at Curry. Wesleyan travels to UMass Dartmouth for its next game also on Tuesday.
