MILTON - Curry College defeated Tufts University 5-4 in overtime in men's hockey action on Tuesday night. The Colonels improve to 4-1 overall, while the Jumbos fell to 2-1.
Curry was the first to get on the board just under five minutes into the opening frame. Senior Michael Curran (Arlington, MA) received a pass from junior George Isham (Chicago, IL) off the face-off and one-timed it past Tufts' senior goalie Scott Barchard (Reading, MA). Midway through the period the Jumbos tied the score off a goal by freshman Andrew White (Rockland, MA), the first of his college career. Both teams had penalties and were playing four on four. The Jumbos took advantage of a man-up situation in the Colonels' defensive zone and were able to put one past freshman goaltender Derek Mohney (Amherst, NY). Freshman Blake Edwards (Columbus, OH) and junior Jared Barker (Ridgefield, CT) were credited with the assists. Tufts outshot Curry 15-11 in the period.
Curry came out strong to start the second period. The Colonels scored back-to-back goals, one short-handed and the other on a power-play. At the 10:11 mark senior Ryan Barlock (Chicago, IL) scored a short-handed goal off assists from senior Josh Kamrass (Norcross, GA) and senior Payden Benning (Estevan, SK). Just two minutes later Curry took a two-goal lead when senior John Williams (Flourtown, PA) scored his first power-play goal of the season. The Colonels won the face-off and Williams received a pass from Isham for his second assist on the night. Barlock was credited with the secondary assist. Curry controlled most of the period, outshooting Tufts 14-9, but the Jumbos were able to post one more before the end of the stanza. With just 20 seconds remaining, Tufts won the face-off and junior Nick Metcalfe (Stoneham, MA) scored off assists from freshmen Tyler Voigt (Rochester, MN) and Shawn Power (Arlington, MA).
Tufts didn't waste much time to even the score as they tied the game at three apiece just 6:15 into the final period. Voigt scored on a slap shot from the blue line off a pass from sophomore Kyle Gallegos (Westminster, CT). The Colonels regained their lead with less than four minutes to play. Curran scored his second goal of the night when sophomore Michael Lopez (Newton, MA) won the face-off and sent the puck to Curran who was open in front of the net. Mohney made some great saves to keep the Colonels with the one-goal lead, but the Jumbos pulled Barchard for the six-man advantage and scored to once again even the play and send the teams into overtime. With just 34 seconds left in regulation, sophomore Garrett Sider (Longwood, FL) found a loose puck in front of Mohney and shot it into the back of the net. Gallegos had his second assist and senior Evan Story (Shaker Heights, OH) earned the secondary. Curry had a 16-7 advantage in shots in the final frame.
Senior Steven Mohler (Yorba Linda, CA) earned the victory for the hosts when he scored the game-winner just 1:37 into overtime. The Jumbos were called for a tripping penalty and Mohler scored the Colonels' second power-play goal of the night. Seniors Barlock and Benning each had the assists.
Curry finished with a total of 44 shots while Tufts finished with 32. The Colonels went 2 for 5 on power-plays while the Jumbos went 0 for 4. Curry's Mohney made 28 saves in net for his fourth win of the season. Tufts' Barchard made 39 total saves in net in the loss.
