Jumbos Shoot the Lights Out in 92-75 Men's Basketball Victory at Wheaton College

Box Score
Freshman C.J. Moss led the Jumbos with 17 points

NORTON - The Tufts Jumbos (4-1) shot 62.5 percent from the field (40/64) and were paced by freshman C.J. Moss (Westport, MA), who scored a game-high 17 points on 7 of 9 shooting, in a 92-75 non-conference win at Wheaton College on Thursday night.

Senior Alex Orchowski (Cornwall, NY) recorded a double-double with 15 points and a team-high 12 rebounds as Tufts outrebounded the Lyons 46-22. Senior tri-captain James Long (Norwell, MA) pitched in with 10 points and five rebounds for the winners.

Senior Brendan Degnan (Narragansett, Ri) led three Lyons in double-figures with 16 points.  Junior Cliften Desravines (Somerville, MA) went for 13 points while sophomore Brian Grossman (Duxbury, MA) added 11 points for the Lyons (4-2), who saw their three-game winning streak snapped.

Tufts shot 60.6 percent in the first half and went to the locker room with a 46-23 advantage. Moss led the way with 12 points while sophomore Kwame Firempong (Inglewood, CA) tallied eight points, four boards and a pair of assists. Wheaton was led by Degnan's seven points while Desravines dropped in five. Defensively, the Jumbos outrebounded the Lyons 25-10 and held them to 34.6 pct. shooting from the floor.

The Lyons outscored the Jumbos 52-46 in the second half, but were never able to cut the deficit to single digits. They improved their shooting percentage by more than 20 points over the final 20 minutes (55.9 percent), but were outscored 60-44 in the paint on the evening.

"I thought Tufts played an excellent game," said Lyons head coach Brian Walmsley. "They executed in all phases of the game. Their guards handled the ball well and their bigs did a good job setting screens and rolling. They did a good job guarding us in the half court."

"They shot 60 percent in each half, and we'd been keeping teams under 40 percent for the year, so the biggest disappointment was allowing a team to come into our gym and score that many points and shoot that high of a percentage," Walmsley said. "That said, I give them credit. They have good players."

The Jumbos travel to Salem State to face Babson in the first game of the New England Big 4 Challenge on Saturday at 1 pm. The Lyons also return to action on Saturday when they travel to Bridgewater for a 2 pm game with the Bears.
