BOSTON - Running at the annual Boston University Valentine Invitational, the Tufts University men's indoor track & field team's distance medley relay ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time on Friday afternoon.
The Jumbos finished with a 10:05.68 time on BU's banked track. The NCAA Division III provisional mark for the DMR is 10:09 flat. Due to the banked track, three seconds are added to the time. Therefore, Tufts slipped inside the qualifying mark with a 10:08.68 adjusted time.
The Jumbo foursome was made up of two freshmen and two sophomores. Freshman Jamie Norton (Groton, MA) ran the 1,200, freshman Graham Beutler (Weston, CT) handled the 400, sophomore Jeff Marvel (Naples, FL) had the 800 leg and sophomore Sam Haney (Essex, CT) anchored the group in the 1,600. The Jumbo foursome was 12th at the meet.
"They can run faster," head coach Ethan Barron said. "We were in the slower heat and Haney had to run the entire mile all alone."
On Saturday at BU, the Jumbos had entries in most of the running events. The day was highlighted by the 800 meters duo of Marvel and junior Connor Rose (Irvine, CA). In a 182-man race, Marvel ran 1:54.94 for the event's 33rd best time, and Rose came across in 1:54.97 for 35th.
Haney also returned on Saturday and finished the mile in 4:17.02. Freshman Liam Cassidy (Brunswick, ME) posted a 8:34.75 time in the 3,000 meters.
Coach Ethan Barron's squad also had athletes in action at a home invitational on Saturday. The Jumbos begin the championship season next weekend at the New England Div. III Championships hosted by Springfield.
