BOSTON - The Tufts University men's indoor track & field team tied for 22nd place at the annual NEICAAA Championships held at Boston University on Friday and Saturday, featuring all of the regions' Division I, II and III teams.
The Tufts performance was highlighted by the efforts of 800 meters entrants Jeff Marvel (Naples, FL) and Connor Rose (Irvine, CA). In the preliminaries, both ran NCAA Championship qualifying times with Marvel seventh overall in 1:52.12 and Rose 10th at 1:52.44. Both shattered the school record of 1:53.10 set by multiple-year All-American James Lavallee in 1994.
Marvel's time is an NCAA automatic qualifying mark, even after adding sixth-tenths of a second to it due to the banked track at BU. His adjusted time of 1:52.72 is within the 1:52.80 automatic mark. Rose's time was converted to 1:53.04, well within the 1:54.90 provisional qualifier. Marvel's time ranks eighth and Rose's is 10th nationally. Marvel made the 800 final at the meet and finished eighth in 1:55.78.
Also shining in the middle distances was Jamie Norton (Groton, MA), who ran a freshman record in the 1000 meters with his 2:29.98 in the finals for sixth place. In the mile, sophomore Sam Haney (Essex, CT) had the highest finish for Tufts with a career-best 4:14.98 time for fifth place.
Sophomore Gbola Ajai (Lagos, Nigeria) scored points for Tufts in the triple jump, reaching 45'7 3/4" (13.91m) for seventh place. He also had a career-best in the long jump at 21'10 3/4" (6.67m) to tie for ninth place.
The Jumbos scored 10 points overall and tied wth Bowdoin for 22nd place. The University of Connecticut won the team championship with a 119.5 score.
The Jumbos have their last meet before the NCAA's next weekend at the Armory in New York City for the ECAC Championships March 4-5.
