FRESHMAN JOHANN SCHMIDT WINS BOTH DIVING TITLES AT 2011 NESCAC CHAMPIONSHIPS


Senior David Meyer swam second for the 400 freestyle relay team that closed the meet with a third-place finish

BRUNSWICK, Me. - Tufts freshman diver Johann Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) won the one-meter and three-meter diving championships to highlight the Tufts University men's swimming & diving team's third-place finish at the 2011 NESCAC Championships Friday through Sunday at Bowdoin College.

Schmidt had placed second in the preliminaries of both diving events, but improved upon his performances in the finals. Early on Friday, he scored 432.95 points in the one-meter trials to place behind Amherst freshman Colin White (438.70). However, in the final on Friday night, Schmidt scored 462.50 and defated White who tallied 448.75 points. On Sunday, Schmidt's preliminary score of 450.15 was second to White again (479.95). He leap-frogged White in the final, scoring 466.15 points to win three-meter.

At opening day of the NESCAC's on Friday, the Jumbo 200 freestyle relay won the preliminary round with a national B-cut qualifying time of 1:22.58. The foursome was junior Owen Rood (Branford, CT), senior Gordy Jenkins (Kansas City, MO), junior E.J. Testa (Cheshire, CT) and senior David Meyer (Clarendon Hills, IL). They placed third in the final with a 1:23.26 finish.

Testa swam a Tufts record time of 23.65 seconds in the 50 backstroke preliminaries on Friday, breaking his own record by 0.34. Rood added a national B-cut time of 20.76 seconds in the 50 freestyle preliminaries. The 400 medley relay - senior Michael Del Moro (Pequannock, NJ), senior Zed Debbaut (Hood River, OR), Testa and Rood - recorded another national B qualifier touching in 3:25.77.

Debbaut's fourth int he 50 breaststroke (26.63), Testa's fourth in the 50 backstroke (23.92) and the 400 medley relay's fourth were the top swimming finishes for Tufts on Friday. The Jumbos were third in team scoring with 481 points after the first day.

On Saturday, Tufts added four more national B times. The 200 medley relay of DelMoro, Debbaut, Testa and Rood hit 1:33.07 in the preliminaries and 1:32.31 for third place in the finals, both NCAA B cuts. DelMoro also had a pair of NCAA B cuts in the 100 backstroke, timing 51.84 in the trials and 51.82 in the finals for fourth place.

Coach Adam Hoyt's Jumbos remained in third place after two days of action. They were at 930 points, sandwiched between Amherst (1125.5) and Middlebury (754). Williams led at 1228.5 points.

On the final day of the meet Sunday, the 400 freestyle relay took third place with a national B time of 3:05.03. They were led off by Testa, followed by Meyer, Jenkins and Rood. Also on Sunday, Rood placed fourth in the 100 freestyle (46.13).

Coach Adam Hoyt's Jumbos finished at a total of 1,318 points. Williams College won the conference title with a 1741. 5 score, followed by Amherst (1614.5).
