LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Tufts University baseball team used a four-run seventh inning and a six-run eighth inning to shut down Lynchburg College and earn the 12-3 win over the Hornets on Friday in non-conference action. It was the season-opener for the Jumbos, who were led by senior RF Chase Rose (Paradise Valley, AZ).
Riding a five-game hitting streak, Lynchburg senior Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA) doubled in a run in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at one. Rose had knocked in the first Tufts run of the season with a single in the first. Colquhoun finished the day going 2-4. Tufts took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth when senior CF David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) walked and scored after a wild pitch, a ground out and a passed ball.
The Jumbos rallied for four runs in the seventh and six in the eighth to take control of the game. Rose's three-run home run highlighted the seventh. Senior DH Ben Walkley (Trumbull, CT) smacked a two-run double in the eighth.
Junior Richard Palase (Staten Island, NY) and senior Mike Walters (Manassas, VA) both had a RBI in the seventh inning for Lynchburg.
The starting pitcher for Tufts (1-0) was Kevin Gilchrist (Medford, MA), who went seven innings giving up six hits and three runs, earning the win. Orlowitz scored four times for the Jumbos, while junior 3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) finished 3 for 6 with two runs and an RBI. Junior Jake Crawford (Boise, ID) and senior Ed Bernstein (Foxborough, MA) both pithced a scoreless inning of relief for Tufts.
Senior Chase Vaden (Lynch Station, VA) started the game for Lynchburg, going three innings and giving up three runs.
Lynchburg (10-9/4-2 ODAC) hosts Eastern Mennonite tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at noon on Fox Field. Tufts plays next on Sunday at Washington & Lee beginning at 1 pm.
