WASHINGTON AND LEE'S JODY DAVIS FIRES COMPLETE-GAME SHUTOUT AGAINST TUFTS BASEBALL

Box Score
Ian Goldberg's single to lead off the fifth started the best scoring chance of the day for Tufts

LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior Jody Davis (McLean, VA) threw Washington and Lee's second complete-game shutout in as many days as the Generals defeated Tufts, 5-0, in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

Davis followed up senior Gregg Laswell's (Houston, TX) similar effort on Saturday with his first career complete game. Davis allowed just six Jumbo singles, he did not walk a batter and struck out five to improve to 2-1 on the season.

The Generals (9-8) jumped on the board early, tallying a single run in the first inning when senior Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, PA) led off with a single and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Junior Alson James (Columbia, SC) then moved him over to third base with a sacrifice bunt before sophomore Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, NC) lofted a sacrifice fly to center that put W&L up 1-0.

The Generals pushed their lead out to 3-0 in the fourth inning thanks to some Tufts (1-1) miscues. Sophomore Alex Maragos (Chicago, IL) led off the inning with a double and sophomore Will Salley (Augusta, GA) followed with a walk and sophomore Luke Deary (Carlisle, MA) then loaded the bases with a single.

Sophomore Mike Savas (Bernardsville, NJ) followed with what looked to be a double play ground ball, however a throwing error by Tufts allowed Savas to reach base safely and both Maragos and Salley to score to give the Generals a 3-0 lead.

W&L added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Cardona scored on a wild pitch and again in the sixth when another Tufts fielding error allowed Savas to score an unearned run.

For Davis, five strikeouts were one short of his career high and it marked the first time in 12 career starts that he did not issue a walk. Offensively, the Generals were led by Cardona who finished 3 for 5 with a pair of runs scored. Maragos was 1 for 4 with a run and Savas was 1 for 3 with a run and a stolen base.

Senior Derek Miller (Whitman, MA) took the loss for the Jumbos, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits, two walks and a strikeout in 4.1 innings of work. Senior RF Chase Rose (Paradise Valley, AZ) was 2  for 4 and sophomore 1B Tom Howard (Rockville Cenre, NY) finished 2 for 3 for Tufts.

The Jumbos continue their spring trip with a game at Guilford on Monday at 3 pm. W&L returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts No. 2 Shenandoah beginning at 3:30 pm.
