Matt Collins had two hits, scored a run and knocked home one for the Jumbos

GREENSBORO, NC – Senior RF Chase Rose (Paradise Valley, AZ), named NESCAC Player of the Week earlier in the day, went 3 for 5 with two rbi, and junior David Ryan (Trumbull, CT) threw seven shutout innings in Tufts University's 8-1 baseball win at Guilford College Monday.
The Jumbos (2-1), ranked 17th in this week's D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll, gradually built an 8-0 lead before the Quakers plated their lone run in the eighth on Kyle Wooden's rbi single.
Tufts opened the game with an unearned run in the first off of Guilford starter Will Henschel (0-2). The Jumbos doubled their lead in the fourth when junior 1B Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) plated Rose with an rbi double, and then broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning that sent Henschel to the showers. Rose delivered a two-out, two-run double in the frame.
Ryan (1-0) looked sharp in his first outing of the spring. He scattered five hits and fanned four before giving way to sophomore Alex Cronkite (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) in the eighth.
Collins, senior CF David Orlovitz (Wakefield, MA) and senior Ben Walkley (Trumbull, CT) all had two hits in Tufts' 12-hit performance.
Wooden had two doubles among his three hits for the Quakers (9-15), who have now dropped three straight following a season-high five-game winning streak.
The Jumbos play two games in two different venues tomorrow. They are at Averett for a 1:30 pm start, and then at Greensboro College at 7 pm. Guilford visits Roanoke College Tuesday at 7 pm in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.
