DANVILLE, VA - An eight-run second inning helped lift the Tufts baseball team to a 13-6 victory against Averett on Tuesday at Owen-Fulton Field. The win improved Tufts to 3-1 on their spring trip, which continues tonight in a game against Greensboro College.
Averett (16-13) took a 3-1 lead after one inning thanks to a two-run blast by James Carter, but that advantage didn't last long.
Tufts took advantage of four walks - including one with the bases loaded - and pounded four hits in the top of the second inning to jump ahead 9-3. Scorching-hot senior RF Chase Rose (Paradise Valley, AZ) had a two-run single in the inning, while junior catcher Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) singled home a run and scored.
Averett closed the gap to 9-6 on a Matt Mitchell RBI single in the seventh, but the Jumbos tacked on four runs in the eighth to pull away. Collins had another rbi single, which was followed by a run-scoring double from sophomore 1B Eric Weikert (Avondale Estates, GA).
The Jumbos had 12 hits in the game, led by three each from senior SS David LeResche (St. Louis, MO), Collins and Weikert. Senior Pat O'Donnell (Worcester, MA) pitched 6.2 innings allowing eight hits and six runs for the win. Freshman reliever Christian Sbily (Gaithersburg, MD) allowed just one hit in 2.1 innings of relief.
Tyler Muench (3-4) took the loss in 2.1 innings of work for Averett. The Cougars return to action at Lynchburg College on Thursday at 6 pm.
