PRINCETON, NJ - Sophomore Matt Rand (Cape Elizabeth, ME) led the way for the Jumbo men's outdoor track & field team at the Sam Howell Invitational hosted by Princeton University on Friday night as he clocked in at a new PR of 30:59.86 for the 10,000 meters race. That time is fast enough to qualify Rand provisionally for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
With the mark, Rand moved up to sixth on the Tufts all-time list in the event. The team was well under the 31:13 NCAA provisional qualifier and it placed 16th out of 37 at the race, which was run under the lights with a 9 pm start.
Rand was backed by sophomore Tyler Andrews (Concord, MA) and senior Nick Welch (Seattle, WA). Andrews added his own PR of 31:46, marking his first time under 32 minutes for the event. Additionally, Welch fared well in his first-ever 10k with an even split 31:41 effort.
The rest of the team is set to compete on Saturday at the Snowflake Classic at home on the Dussault Track.
