WATERVILLE, ME - Tufts University ended up with three victories on Saturday after winning a game that was postponed because of darkness on Friday and then sweeping the regularly scheduled doubleheader against Colby College in NESCAC East Division action at Coombs Field.
With the series sweep, the Jumbos improved to 9-0 in the East and secured a spot in the upcoming conference tournament. Coach John Casey's Jumbos (15-4-1) have not lost since returning from their spring break trip, and have won 12 in a row overall.
The teams finished what they started on Friday by playing the 10th inning of the postponed game and 25th-ranked Tufts scored two runs to earn the 11-9 victory. The Jumbos then won 4-3 and 10-4 in the other contests.
In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Jumbos went ahead 3-0 after a three-run third inning. Sophomore Tom Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) reached base on an error and later scored from third on a wild pitch. Frank Petroskey (Dallas, TX) and David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) both walked and came around to score on a two-run double by Sam Sager (Cranston, RI).
The Mules scraped together two runs in the fifth inning to cut the margin to one run. Nikolas Atsalis, who had walked, scored from third on a wild pitch after Richard Newton had come across on an rbi double by Mike Mastrocola.
The Jumbos scored their fourth run in the top of the sixth inning when senior Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL) led off with walk, was sacrificed to second by Howard, moved to third on a single by Petroskey, and scored on an RBI single by David LeResche (St. Louis, MO).
Nate Ellis had an RBI single to bring in Taro Gold for Colby in the sixth inning, but the Mules could not get another run.
Colby took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game when Brendan Gallagher hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Richard Newton.
Tufts took the lead for good with three runs in the second inning. Petroskey had an rbi single, Rose brought in another run with a bases loaded walk after Orlowitz was hit by a pitch to bring in a run.
The Mules kept it close with a lone run in the second inning on John Schroeder's sacrifice fly to bring in Robb Arndt. However, Tufts countered with a bases-clearing triple by Orlowitz in the top of the third inning.
The Jumbos added three more runs in the fifth inning and had a lone run in the eighth after Colby (10-14, 0-6 NESCAC) had scored two runs in the seventh inning.
