BASEBALL'S WINNING STREAK AT 14 GAMES AFTER DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP AT UMASS DARTMOUTH

Shortstop David LeResche scored two runs and had three rbi in the two games

NORTH DARTMOUTH - The Tufts University baseball team stretched its winning streak to 14 games on Monday by sweeping the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 16-1 and 4-3. The Jumbos haven't lost since March 25 and stand at 17-4-1 overall.

Tied 1-1 after the first inning, the Jumbos scored three times in the second inning to take a lead they never surrendered. Tufts added three runs in the third, five runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and their final run in the seventh en route to a 16-1 win in the first game.

Tufts seniors David LeResche (St. Louis, MO), David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) and Ben Walkley (Trumbull, CT) each had two rbi's during the contest. Jumbos senior pitcher Pat O'Donnell (Worcester, MA) earned the win, allowing five hits and one run with four strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Corsairs sophomore starter Aaron Brunette (North Andover, MA) took the loss in 5.2 innings pitched, giving up nine runs on eight hits with five walks.

In the second game, the Corsairs struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second behind an rbi from senior shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA) then a run by junior first baseman Anthony Fiorita (North Reading, MA) on a passed ball.

Tufts tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the fifth when LeResche and Orlowitz scored on a fielder's choice and a sacrifice respectively. The Jumbos took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth on an rbi single by LeResche. The Corsairs answered in the bottom of the inning after freshman outfielder Shane Leupold (Newington, CT) drew a walk then scored when McDermott struck out, but reached base on a passed ball.

In the top of the seventh, after being hit by a pitch, Jumbos junior third baseman Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) scored on an error by Fiorita, giving Tufts a 4-3 advantage. The Corsairs had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but Fiorita popped out to shortstop, handing Tufts the 4-3 victory.

Corsairs junior pitcher Mike St. Martin (Worcester, MA) pitched 6.2 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Jumbos junior reliever Jake Crawford (Boise, ID) took the win, allowing a run with four strikeouts in two innings of work. Tufts senior reliever Edward Bernstein (Foxborough, MA) closed out the seventh inning, earning his fourth save of the season.

Tufts will visit Brandeis Wednesday seeking to extend their streak to 15. The Corsairs, now 10-15, will return to action when they host Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference game Tuesday.
