Freshman Ben Wallis was first in the 3,000 steeplechase

MEDFORD - The Tufts University men's outdoor track & field team had three first-place finishes, leading the way to a winning score of 167 points at the annaul Snowflake Classic hosted by the Jumbos at Dussault Track on Saturday. The Tufts total was 22 better than second-place Springfield College in the 12-team meet.
The Jumbos had first-place efforts in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the high jump and the pole vault. Freshman Ben Wallis (Dover, NH) won a five-man steeplechase race by 22 seconds with a 10:01.76 time. Junior Alex Orchowski (Cornwall, NY), who joined the team for the outdoor season after playing basketball for the Jumbos, got over the bar at 6'1 1/4" (1.86m) to win the high jump. Veteran Sam Read (Barkhamsted, CT) was atop the pole vault field at 13'11 1/4" (4.25m).
Freshman Graham Beutler (Weston, CT) had one of four Jumbo second-place performances. He ran a time of 50.91 seconds in the 400 meters, just 0.74 off the winning pace. Freshman Brian McLaughlin (Barrington, RI) was only four-tenths of a second out of first place in the 1,500 meter run with his 4:03.04 time. The Jumbos had three finishers in the top five for that event. Sophomore Gbola Ajayi (Lagos, Nigeria) was the runner-up in both the long jump at 21'9 1/2" (6.64m) and in the triple jump at 43'10" (13.36m).
Freshman Kevin Norman (Billerica, MA) added a third place in the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:01.74 finish. Among the throwers, freshman Atticus Swett (Bow, NH) had the best finish with a third in the javelin throw (162' 6"/49.54m).
The Jumbos are at UMass Lowell's George Davis Invitational next Saturday.
