Sophomore Brad Nakanishi was the only pole vaulter at the meet to clear 14 feet

LOWELL - Sophomore Brad Nakanishi (Scarborough, ME) and freshman Liam Cassidy (Brunswick, ME) both won events for the Tufts men's outdoor track & field team at the non-scoring George Davis Invitational hosted by UMass Lowell on Saturday.
Nakanishi topped the pole vault field with a 14'5 1/4" (4.40m) effort. He was one of three Jumbos in the top six for the event, including second-place senior Sam Read (Barkhamsted, CT) at 13'11 1/4" (4.25m). Cassidy was first in the 5,000 meters, recording a 15:11.72 time that was a few seconds ahead of Division I Providence's Matt Terry (15:14.23).
Junior Alex Orchowski (Cornwall, NY), who joined the squad after basketball season, has given the Jumbos a strong presence in the high jump along with sophomore teammate Michael Blair (Wellesley, MA). Orchowski's 6'4 3/4" (1.95m) best was third at the meet.
Sophomore Gbola Ajayi (Lagos, Nigeria) is also emerging in the jump events, taking second in the long jump at 22'9 3/4" (6.95m) and fourth in the triple jump at 44'9 3/4" (13.66m). Ajayi also led off the 4x100 relay that placed third with a time of 43.97 seconds behind New Haven and Boston University. He was joined by sophomore Vinnie Lee (Walpole, MA), freshman Daniel Lange Vagle (St. Paul, MN) and freshman anchor Jordan Dietrich (Shawnee Mission, KS).
Senior Alex Gresham's (Milton, MA) 166'2" (50.64m) in the hammer throw also took third.
Tufts competes at the MIT Invitational next Saturday.
