PRINCETON, NJ - Sophomore Matt Rand (Cape Elizabeth, ME) of the Tufts men's outdoor track & field team improved his national qualifying time in the 10,000 meters by over 33 seconds with his performance at the IC4A Championships at Princeton on Friday night.
Running in a 28-man field in which all of the other athletes were from Division I, Rand ran a 30:26.59 time in the 10K to place seventh at the meet. He was only two seconds out of fifth place, where Dartmouth's Jon Gault and Duke's Josh Brewer finished with exactly the same 30:24.67 time.
Rand's time stands to improve his NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the event by about 20 spots. His previous top time of 30:59.86 was also recorded at Princeton at the Sam Howell Invite on April 1. That mark was 34th on the NCAA list entering the weekend. He should be among the top 15 with the new time.
