HARWICH - Ian Williams had two hits, including a two-run home run, to power #8 seeded Bridgewater State to a 4-0 upset win Wednesday over top seed Tufts in Game 2 of the 2011 NCAA Division III New England Regional Baseball Championship at Whitehouse Field.
The Bears (24-15) led 2-0 after the top of the first inning before Williams deposited a pitch on a 2-2 count over the left-center fence in the third, providing for the final margin of victory. He finished with three runs batted in.
That was more than enough offense for Bridgewater starter Corey Batista (7-2), who threw his ninth complete of the season. He walked one, struck out seven and scattered six hits to earn his fifth shutout.
Sophomore 1B Eric Weikert (Avondale Estates, GA) led the Jumbos (26-8-1) with two hits and senior LF Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL), senior DH Chase Rose (Paradise Valley, AZ), senior 2B Frank Petroskey (Dallas, TX) and sophomore RF Nate Izzo (Saunderstown, RI) had one each.
The Jumbos had opportunities to score, leaving seven men on base. However, only one Jumbo runner touched third base when Weikert got there with two outs in the second. Tufts pitching stranded nine Bears' base runners.
Jumbo starter Derek Miller (Whitman, MA) gave up three hits and two runs in one inning and took the loss for Tufts, which is ranked #15 nationally in the ABCA coaches' poll. Freshman Christian Sbily (Gaithersburg, MD) relieved Miller in the second and after allowing Williams' home run he kept the Jumbos in the game by pitching 7.2 innings. He allowed just three hits and retired 15 of 18 batters at one point.
David Pierce also had two hits for the Bears, who will face Rhode Island College in Game 7 of the winners' bracket. Tufts plays MIT in an elimination game on Thursday morning at 9:30 am.
