WATERVILLE, ME - Senior co-captain Lindsay Griffith (Wilmington, DE) scored with just 2:07 left in the game as ninth-ranked Tufts University scored twice in the final 8:10 of the contest to pull out a 2-1 win over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference field hockey Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.
Tufts improves to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in NESCAC play, while the Mules fall to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Colby went ahead 1-0 with 28 minutes left in the game when Caitlyn Lancaster's (Cornville, ME) cross from the right side found Hannah O'Brien (Wolfeboro Falls, NH) wide open in front of the net. O'Brien calmly smacked a shot past Tufts keeper Marianna Zak (Concord, MA) for her second goal of the season.
The Mules appeared to have a chance to pull off a big upset with Colby goaltender Michelle Burt (Woodbridge, CT) making numerous difficult stops in net.
Tufts first-year midfielder Maggie Chapman (St. Louis, MO) created the Jumbos' first goal. She made a nice run under heavy defensive pressure and found teammate Lia Sagerman (LaJolla, CA) for the goal with 8:10 remaining.
The Jumbos, who had a 22-8 shots advantage and an 11-3 margin in penalty corners, kept putting on the pressure and earned a penalty corner. Burt stopped the initial shot off the penalty corner, a second shot was blocked, and the ball rolled through the front of the goal from the block to Griffith for the score.
Zak stopped four shots in net for Tufts.
