MALDEN - Senior Mark Colp (Wareham, MA) and sophomore Brian Safstrom (Woodinville, WA) scored two goals apiece as the #6 Amherst College hockey team built a 6-0 lead and earned an eventual 7-1 victory at Tufts on Friday night at Valley Forum II.
The Lord Jeffs kept their hold on first place with the victory, improving to 10-2-1 overall and 7-1 in NESCAC with their second win in a row. The Jumbos lost for the first time in four games, falling to 5-6-1 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
Seven Amherst players overall posted multi-point games. Both Colp and Safstrom had assists to finish with three points, while junior Nick Brunette (Chaska, MN) had a goal and two assists. Senior Jonathan LaRose (Boyle, ALB) made 18 saves in the Amherst net for the victory.
The visitors scored the lone goal of the first period, Colp's fifth of the season at 9:02. They finished with a 12-7 advantage in shots, as Jumbo senior Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) made 11 saves in the first stanza.
In the second period, Amherst's Mike Moher (Toronto, ONT) scored the eventual game-winner at 13:55. Safstrom then netted the Lord Jeff's first of three power-play goals with just one second remaining in the man-advantage and four seconds left in the period for a 3-0 advantage.
Amherst put the game away with three more goals in the first 9:38 of the third period. Safstrom's second, another power-play strike, came at 1:45, while Colp tallied his second of the game at 7:24. The Lord Jeff lead ballooned to 6-0 when Dylan Trumble scored at 9:38.
The Jumbos broke up the shutout as sophomore Kyle Gallegos (Westminster, CO), in his first game back from an injury, scored his fifth goal at 15:14 to make it 6-1. Brunette put the icing on the cake for Amherst with a power-play goal at 16:33.
The Lord Jeffs, who finished 3 for 7 with a man-advantage, got two assists each from freshman Mike Rowbotham (Stittsville, ONT), freshman Aaron Duetsch (Lloyd Harbor, NY) and junior Johnny Van Sicien (Carlisle, MA). Moher finished with a goal and an assist. Amherst had a 35-19 advantage in shots.
Tufts' Barchard finished with 20 saves before he was replaced by senior Evin Koleini (Buffalo, NY) at 1:45 of the third period. Koleini stopped eight shots.
Tufts hosts Hamilton in another NESCAC game tomorrow afternoon beginning at 4:15 pm. Amherst is at Connecticut College tomorrow at 3 pm.
