Relays lead Tufts Men's Track & Field to First Victory of the Season at Home

Clint Porte ran the third leg of the 4x200 relay victory for Tufts

MEDFORD - With four victories and five runner-up finishes, the Tufts men's track and field team won the Tufts Invitational on Saturday.

The Jumbos tallied 187.5 points, 48.5 ahead of runner-up UMass Lowell. Worcester State finished third with 117 points while Amherst and Fitchburg State rounded out the top five with 94 and 49.5 points respectively.

Two relay teams were victorious for Tufts. The 4x200 team composed of senior Ben Crastnopol (Doylestown, PA), juniors Gbola Ajayi (Lagos, Nigeria) and Lawrence Xia (Acton, MA) and sophomore Clint Porte (Chicopee, MA) recorded a time of 1:35.01 to win the event. Likewise, the 4x800 meter relay team of sophomores Graham Beutler (Weston, CT), Jamie Norton, (Groton, MA), Bobby McShane (Mansfield, MA), and freshman Alex Scheltzer (St. Davids, PA) won the event with a time of 8:13.54.

Tufts' individual victories came from freshman Brian Williamson (Prairie Village, KS) and junior Matt Rand (Cape Elizabeth, ME).  Williamson recorded a toss of 49'4 1/2" (15.05m) to win the shot put. Rand clocked a time of 8:44.07 to win the 3,000.

Two-tenths of a second behind Rand in the 3k was sophomore Liam Cassidy (Brunswick, ME), who notched eight second-place points for Tufts. Classmate Jamie Norton, in addition to his leg on the 4x800 meter relay, was able to place second in the 1,000 with his time of 2:31.55.

In the sprint events, junior Vinnie Lee (Walpole, MA) and freshman Ptah Osayande (Wallingford, PA) recorded runner-up performances. Lee's time of 7.26 took second in the 60m, while Osayande's time of 8.72 was good enough for second in the 60-meter hurdles.

In the field events, the Jumbos notched two runner-up performances. Sophomore Trevor Rothaus (Placentia, CA) cleared the bar at 14'7 1/4" (4.45m) to take second in the pole vault, while junior Curtis Yancy's (St. Louis, MO) toss of 54'2" (16.51m) was good enough for second in the weight throw.

With still over a month until the championship season, the Jumbos have plenty of time to improve on these impressive early-season perfomances.

Coach Ethan Barron's squad will now look forward to competing in the Springfield Invitational next Saturday.
