SPRINGFIELD - Tufts men's track & field athletes finished in the top six of 10 different events to place fourth of nine teams at the Springfield Invitational on Saturday.
MIT notched a landslide victory with 176 points. Host Springfield finished as the runner-up with 100 points, followed by UMass Dartmouth in third with 93 points. The Jumbos accumulated 67 points for fourth and Ramapo rounded out the top five with 42 points.
Junior Brad Nakanishi (Scarborough, ME) and freshman Brian Williamson (Prairie Village, KS) each won their respective events. Nakanishi cleared 14'11" (4.55m) in the pole vault and Williamson launched the shot put 48'4 1/2" (14.74m).
Freshman Ptah Osayande (Wallingford, PA) recorded a runner-up finish in the 60m hurdles with his time of 8.93 seconds. Also finishing second for Tufts were the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay teams. The 4x400 team comprised of junior Lawrence Xia (Acton, MA), senior Ben Crastnopol (Doylestown, PA), sophomore Max Levitin (Great Neck, NY) and freshman Francis Goins (Shaker Heights, OH) clocked a time of 3:30.19. The 4x800 team of juniors Sam Haney (Essex, CT) and Adam Brosh (Agoura Hills, CA), and freshmen Sam Garfield (Holland, PA) and Andy Phillips (Mt. Vernon, NY) recorded a time of 8:24.72 for second place.
Haney also secured a top-three finish in the 1,000 with his time of 2:38.73. Also notching a top-three finish was junior Curtis Yancy (St. Louis, MO), whose toss of 53'9 3/4" (16.40m) was good enough for third in the weight throw. Senior co-captain Adam Aronson (Norwood, MA) also fared well in the weight throw. His toss of 49'5 1/2" (15.07m) was good enough for fifth place.
Xia, in addition to his leg on the 4x400 meter relay, was able to record a top-five finish in the 200 with his time of 24.05 seconds. Junior Vinnie Lee (Walpole, MA) clocked a time of 52.78 in the 400 to place fifth. The Jumbos also benefited from a sixth-place finish from Adam Brosh (Agoura Hills, CA) in the mile with his time of 4:28.46.
Several solid early-season benchmark performances were set by the Jumbos on Saturday. They will look to build off these marks as the season progresses.
Next weekend, Coach Ethan Barron's team will split up and compete at the Terrier Invitational at Boston University and at the Bowdoin Invitational.
