BOSTON - Junior defenseman Jared Barker (Ridgefield, CT) scored his first goal of the season 28 seconds into overtime to give the Tufts hockey team a 2-1 win and the championship of the 47th Annual Codfish Bowl over host UMass Boston on Saturay afternoon.
Tournament MVP Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) made 42 saves for Tufts as the Beacons out-shot the Jumbos by a 43-17 count in the game. Barker and freshman defenseman Blake Edwards (Columbus, OH) were also named to the All-Tournament Team for the Jumbos.
Barchard had 17 saves in a scoreless first period. The Jumbos took a 1-0 lead just 42 seconds into the second frame when Edwards scored a power play goal off assists from Barker and freshman Tyler Voigt (Rochester, MN). The Beacons came back and tied the score at 1-1 on Rob Florentino's fifth goal of the year at 8:58 of the second.
Tufts would have to kill three penalties later in the period, including twice when they were down two men. Barchard had 12 saves in the period.
Again in the third, Tufts was short-handed twice and didn't give up a goal. They kept UMass Boston from scoring on six power play attempts overall. Barchard had 13 saves in the third stanza.
In overtime, Barker scored on the first shot to give Tufts the title.
Coach Brian Murphy's Jumbos won twice in extra time during the Codfish Bowl. In the opening round on Friday, Tufts advanced past Johnson & Wales in a shoot-out. For the weekend, Tufts held their opponents to 1 for 9 on the power play, while scoring three times with a man-advantage. Barchard stopped 75 of the 79 shots he saw (.949) in the two games.
The Jumbos are off until they return to NESCAC action at home against Amherst next Friday night (Jan. 13). Face off is at 7 pm. UMass Boston hosts Saint Michael's College that night at 7.
