Jumbo Field Hockey Overcomes Early Deficit to Win 12th in a Row, 4-1 Against Hamilton

Box Score
Emily Cannon scored on a penalty stroke for Tufts

MEDFORD - Winless Hamilton scored first, but the #8 Tufts field hockey team erased the deficit by halftime and went on to a 4-1 victory over the Continentals in a NESCAC game at Bello Field on Saturday afternoon. The victory was the 12th straight for the Jumbos.

Four different players scored goals as the Jumbos improved to 12-1 overall and 8-1 NESCAC. Hamilton fell to 0-13 and 0-8 in the league.

Though the Jumbos were controlling possession early in the first half with three corners, Hamilton would take a 1-0 lead when sophomore Katey Hopper (Greenwich, CT) scored on a breakaway with 20:31 on the clock. It was the first goal against Tufts in five games.

The hosts continued to pile up shots and penalty corner chances, but with the clock under 10 minutes to go until halftime the Continentals hung on to their 1-0 lead. However, Tufts would tie the score with their own breakaway. Junior Chelsea Yogerst (San Diego, CA) scored her fourth goal in the last two games with 5:39 to go until intermission.

It looked like the game would go to halftime tied 1-1, but Tufts was able to grab the lead when first-year Hannah Park (Baltimore, MD) scored the eventual game-winner with just 30 seconds remaining. Sophomore Maggie Chapman (St. Louis, MO) assisted. The Jumbos had advantages of 10-2 in shots and 6-0 in corners at the half.

Early in the second half, Tufts was awarded a penalty stroke when Sagerman was knocked down by Continental goalie Victoria Trentini (Briarcliff Manor, NY). Junior Emily Cannon (Atkinson, NH) took the storke and scored for a 3-1 Jumbo lead.

Trentini played well for Hamilton, finishing with 14 saves. She had 10 in the second half as the Jumbos out-shot the Continentals 22-0 in the period and had nine corners. Trentini also saved a second Tufts penalty stroke with 3:43 remaining.

The Jumbos would score late in the period again, as Chapman closed the scoring with 20 seconds remaining off an assist from senior Missy Karp (Berwyn, PA).

Tufts finished with 32-2 and 15-0 counts in shots and penalty corners, repsectively.

The Jumbos and Bowdoin play for second place in NESCAC on Wednesday at 4:30. Hamilton finishes its season at William Smith that day.
