Rutland, VT – In the first round of the Rutland Herald Invitational at Spartan Stadium, the Manhattanville Valiants took down the Tufts Jumbos 7-0. The Valiants jumped out to an early lead, and then exploded for five goals in the third period to seal their victory.
The Valiants were led by forwards Mark Rivera and Louis Balzano, and defenseman Anton Racklin. Rivera scored once and dished off two assists, while Balzano and Racklin each tallied a goal and an assist.
Manhattanville scored within the first 21 seconds of the game to take an early 1-0 lead. Racklin took a shot from the end line along the boards and the puck bounced off of Jumbo goalie Brian Phillips (Colleyville, TX). Jason Bowles was following the play and came through the zone to wrist the puck over the glove of Phillips.
In the second period, the Valiants tallied another score as Racklin notched his second goal of the year. The defenseman sent the puck in front of the net from the flank and it ricocheted off of a Tufts defender and past Phillips. The score gave Manhattanville a 2-0 lead that would hold until the end of the period.
The Valiants broke the game open in the third period, netting five goals in the frame to extend their lead and seal their victory. Mark Rivera, Paul Sirignano, Aaron Enns, Louis Balzano, and Matt Coleman each scored for Manhattanville.
Manhattanville goalie Brian Fleming stopped 23 shots for the shutout victory, his first of the season. Phillips made 40 saves before being pulled in favor of Greg Jenkins (Washington, DC), who turned away eight attempts in the third period.
With the loss, the Jumbos fall to 2-1-1 and will take on either Brockport in the consolation match tomorrow at noon. The Valiants improve to 5-1-1 and will face Castleton in the championship game of the Rutland Herald Invitational at 3 pm.
