WALTHAM - In the consolation game of the New England Big 4 Challenge at Brandeis on Sunday, Tufts (3-2) used a balanced attack to put away Babson, 83-58. Five different Jumbo players scored in double figures in the win, led by 13 off the bench from Stephen Haladnya (Hamilton, MA).
Junior guard Kwame Firempong (Inglewood, CA) added 12 points, Timothy Folliard (Richmond, VA) and Oliver Cohen (Penn Valley, PA) had 11 each, and Matt Lanchantin (Natick, MA) had 10. Senior Scott Anderson (Sudbury, MA) had a game-high 10 rebounds and matched Firempong for team-high honors with three assists. Anderson was named to the All-Tournament team.
Babson's (2-3) Matt Palazini (Franklin, MA) led the Beavers with a game-high 16 points, while sophomore forward John Wickey (Manchester, NH) had 13 points and six boards.
Tufts won the rebounding battle, 51-29, helping to offset a 16-7 edge in the turnover department in favor of the Beavers.
An 11-0 second-half run enabled the Jumbos to pull away from Babson. Babson had taken its largest lead of the contest midway through a closely-contested first half, as a Wickey jumper made it 22-16 in favor of the Beavers. However, Tufts rallied to eventually take a slim 30-29 cushion into the break.
Babson was within striking distance at 37-34 in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Jumbos put the game away with an 11-0 surge that pushed their advantage to 48-34 with 14:03 left to play.
The Beavers would end the run at the 13-minute mark, but Tufts would go on to net six more unanswered points to expand the margin to 52-36. The Beavers would not threaten the rest of the way as Tufts claimed the 83-58 win.
Tufts has a Tuesday game at MIT starting at 7 pm before traveling to the Lopata Classic in St. Louis next weekend. Babson hosts Newbury next on Thursday at 7 pm.
