WILLIAMSTOWN - Host Williams College scored four unanswered goals from early in the second period into early in the third and took a 5-2 win over Tufts in a NESCAC men's hockey game on Friday night.
Zander Masucci had a goal and an assist for Williams (3-2, 2-1 NESCAC), while both Nick Anderson and John Wickman finished with three assists. The loss was the first in conference play for the Jumbos (3-2-1, 1-1-1), who got two assists from junior Kyle Gallegos (Westminster, CO).
The Jumbos had a 1-0 lead just 3:52 into the game when Gallegos set up sophomore defenseman Blake Edwards (Columbus, OH). However, Williams evened the score with 2:46 remaining in the first stanza on Masucci's first goal of the year. The Ephs out-shot Tufts 15-9 in the period, with Jumbo junior goalie Brian Phillips (Colleyville, TX) making 14 saves.
Tufts had the lead 2-1 on an unassisted goal by senior defenseman Jared Barker (Ridgefield, CT) at 3:49 of the second. Less than three minutes later, the Ephs started their four-goal run with a tally by Alex DeBaere at 6:11. Barely two minutes later, Williams converted on a power-play to take their first lead (3-2) with David Jarrett scoring at 8:20. The Jumbos had the shots advantage in the second at 13-10. This time Eph goalie Sean Dougherty stood tall with 12 saves.
By 5:33 into the third, Williams had pushed its lead to 5-2. Eric Rubino scored at 2:18 and Evan Dugdale followed at 5:33. Anderson had assists on both goals. The Jumbos pulled within 5-3 just 38 seconds after the fifth Williams goal as freshman Luke Griffin (Arlington, MA) recorded his first collegiate strike at 6:11. However, that would be the last goal of the game.
The final period featured an emergency defensive effort from Williams' back-up goaltender Noah Klag. When Dougherty was forced to leave the ice with an equipment malfunction just two minutes into action, Klag entered the game and made a nice save to stop the puck just before it crossed the goal line.
Dougherty finished with 24 saves for the Ephs, while Phillips finished with 36 saves in the Tufts net. Williams recorded a 41-28 final total in shots.
Tufts continues its weekend road trip with a 4 pm conference game at Middlebury tomorrow. Williams welcomes Connecticut College for NESCAC action tomorrow at 3 pm.
